Drink to Remember

Maundy Thursday

Taking Communion always reminds me how much I’m loved and how much I’ve been forgiven.

Jesus was an expert at using word pictures to help us remember important truths. At His last supper with the disciples, also called the Lord’s Supper, He used actual bread and wine to paint the most beautiful truth of all.

The bread represented His body which would be bruised, broken, and bleeding the next day. As He broke the bread into pieces, He told them: “Take and eat; this is my body.”  Matthew 26:26  His body would suffer terrible abuse and torture within the next 24 hours.

“Then he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’” Matthew 26:27-28

The cup of wine represented His blood which would be shed. His body would have been covered in His blood as it poured down the cross and onto the ground.

“In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Hebrews 9:22

The sin of all humankind had to be paid for, and the only acceptable payment was a perfect sacrifice. Jesus who knew no sin became sin in order to set us free.

His blood would flow freely. Jesus told them the cup represented His blood.

Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19

He knows how easily distracted we are. How easily we forget. Jesus told us to observe the taking of the bread and the cup to focus on minds on remembering what He did for us on the cross.

Jesus, thank you for Your sacrifice! Thank You for shedding Your blood to pay for our sin. Help us to remember every day what You did to redeem our souls.
