Choosing to Praise

 IMG_0793psalm 108 2nd

“My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.” Psalm 108:1-4 (ESV)

God called King David a man after His own heart (Acts 13:22). There are many reasons God said this about David but Psalm 108 shows us one clear reason. David was fixed on praising God. He was fixed on praising God not because things always went his way. Not because he never suffered. Not because he was perfect. It was a choice he made. He told God, “My heart is steadfast!” To be steadfast is to be firm, stable, established, fixed. He was set on praising God and nothing would sway him from that. He said,

I WILL sing and make melody with all my being!

I WILL awake the dawn!

I WILL give thanks to you, O LORD!

I WILL sing praises to you among the nations.

David determined to sing for God with all his being. He chose to start his day praising God. He made the choice to give thanks to Him. He was set on praising God in his heart and also chose to praise Him among the nations.

Why? Why would he praise him in spite of trouble and oppression? Why would he praise Him in spite of his own weaknesses? Why would he praise Him in the midst of daily struggles?

“For your steadfast love is great above the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!” Psalm 108:4-5

Why would he praise Him? Because God’s love is great above the heavens! His love never fails. His love is everlasting! Because His faithfulness goes on forever!

He deserves all praise and all glory! His love and faithfulness will never fail us.

Like David, I can choose to praise Him. I can say with David:

I will sing and make melody with all my heart!

I will wake up in the morning praising Him!

I will give thanks to you, O LORD!

I will sing your praises to those around me.

It’s a choice I can make. I can praise Him in spite of circumstances because He never changes. His character is firm in spite of my problems and struggles. I can praise Him because His love for me never fails. He will never love me any less. I can make the choice to sing and make music in my heart. I can thank Him everyday for all He does for me. I can also choose to praise His name to those around me. I can tell them how great He is.

God’s love for me is steadfast. It will never change. His faithfulness goes on forever. He is worthy of all my praise.

I will give thanks to you, O LORD! I will sing your praises to others. Praise your Holy Name!

This is a choice we can make every day! It’s a gift we give to our Lord.

Take a Taste!

When I was growing up, we ate a lot of canned vegetables and fried foods. There were a lot of foods I firmly believed I didn’t like. Through the years I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find out I like some foods I thought I hated.

How’d I find out I do like these foods?

I took a taste.

Fresh baby spinach cannot compare to canned spinach (yuck)!

I took a taste of the real, fresh item not something processed or canned. And I discovered some wonderful foods that are so much better than some of the things I would normally eat. I feel sad I wasted so many years I could’ve been enjoying these foods!

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

Many have preconceived ideas about God from childhood or from listening to others.

Some have the idea God is distant, uncaring, vengeful, or like an angry earthly father. Because of these ideas, some refuse to even consider God. Others have decided He does not exist or think if they believed, He would take all the fun out of their lives.

God says, “Take a taste.”

“Try me.”

Some say they did try but God let them down. But it may be like when I tried canned spinach instead of the real thing. There’s no comparison.

If we reach out to an idea of God that someone else has told us about or to an idea of God that we ourselves have created, then we’ll be disappointed. But if we reach out to the true, living, Holy God, we’ll find that He is good.

How do we find the true God?

We start by going to His Holy Word, the truth He’s revealed to us.

We read it for ourselves not just reading what someone said about it.

As we read, we ask God, with an open heart and mind, to reveal Himself to us. We also need to be willing to hear, willing to find him.

In Jeremiah 29:13, God says, You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. In Hebrews 11:6, it’s written, And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

God knows our hearts. He knows when we are seeking him and He will answer. Sometimes, we come to him seeking something we want but not really caring about Him. God wants us to seek him first. (Matthew 6:33)

Seek God.

Take a taste.

He is so wonderful! He gives peace, comfort, hope and joy. Taste and see that God is truth. He is light. He has revealed Himself to us through Jesus Christ. That’s how much he loves us! We need to seek who God is as shown in His written word.

May we look into his word for ourselves to find truth. We will each answer for ourselves when we face God, not someone else, shouldn’t we find out what is true? I don’t want my future to depend on what someone else said or on what I imagined. I want to find it from the source.

I will seek God, I will study his written word and I will know he is good.

Father, thank you that you allow us to know you! Thank you for revealing yourself to us through your written word. Please help us to seek you with our whole hearts. Help us to seek you first. You’re so good LORD! We praise you and adore you!
