Living For More Than Self

background-Eph 5 1014963_1920

S – “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:15-17

O – We should take careful thought about how we walk, how we live our lives, and not just foolishly trip along, not examining our actions. We need to be wise and make the best use of our time not wasting it just living for the moment, living for ourselves. To make the best use of our time is to understand the will of the Lord. This is imperative because the days are evil. This is not Leave it to Beaver. These are evil days. People are suffering on earth, dying, and going to hell. We can’t just skip through life picking out paint colors, and drinking tea. There’s something greater going on. It’s not sinful to enjoy the gifts we have, but it is sinful to pretend that’s all there is to life. There will be no reward in heaven for just enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

A/P – Father, I need this truth in my life. I need to live for more than just taking care of our house, decorating, shopping, cleaning, eating, and going my merry way. I know this isn’t all there is. I know people all around are hurting. I know so many in the world don’t have the gifts I do. I don’t want to live like the “princess in the tower” or the “girl in a bubble”. Open my eyes to see, to give, to sacrifice, and to be willing to serve. Thank you for all the gifts you have given me! Thank you for the privilege to learn, study, and grow. Thank you for your love.

This is a message straight to me, to my heart. I pray God will help me move beyond where I am and live more wisely.

Someday I will paint a picture

with warm and vibrant colors.

Someday I will write beautiful words

that will dance in a person’s soul.

Someday I will write letters

to those I love and

tell them what they mean to me.

Someday I will learn how to play beautiful music

that comes from the depths of my heart.

Someday I will tell people

what God has done for me.

Someday I will teach my child

all the lessons that are in my heart.

Someday I will let my light shine

as God wants me to.

When is someday?

When will that be?

How long have I waited for that day to come?

If someday does not become today,

it will not ever come.

Today I will….

What will you do today?

What Jesus Did

“Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he….” John 13:3

What would I expect this to say?

Jesus knew all things were under his power…so He…

Made a blind man see?

Raised someone from the dead?

Healed the sick?

Defeated the enemy?

Preached a great sermon?

Stilled a storm?

Showed His glory?

What would I do if I knew God had put all things under my power?

What did Jesus do?

He “got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist…and began to wash his disciples feet.” John 13:4-5

Okay. He knew He had all power, so He got up, knelt down, took the job of a servant and washed 12 pairs of dirty feet? Including the feet of one He knew would betray Him?

Yes, that is what the Son of God did. He did this as an example for us.

This truth blows my mind.

It’s so opposite of our fleshly human nature. So opposite of what most of us would do. Usually the more power one has the more we expect others to serve us.

Jesus did this as an example for us, to set an example for me. What would this look like in my life? Am I supposed to go around washing feet?

I think it looks like meeting the need that is in front of me.

Jesus knew their feet needed to be washed.

What do I see?

Someone who needs a meal…

A mom who needs a sitter…

A hurting soul who needs a listening ear…

Someone sick who needs a visitor…

A lonely person who needs a friend…

Ministries that need help…

Am I willing to get my hands dirty?

Am I willing to step out of my comfort zone?

How can we follow the example of Jesus today by serving someone in need?

“Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility…” Zephaniah 2:3a

Seek Humility
