S – “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30
O – The greatest moment in history. “It is finished.” Jesus accomplished what He came to do. He paid the price for the sins of all humanity. He redeemed all humankind. He fulfilled the law and paid the price for our sin. He finished the work. It was complete. Nothing else needs to be done. All that is left is to believe and receive the gift. To accept his righteousness and confess Jesus Christ as Lord.
A – In that moment, Jesus paid for my sin. When He said, “It is finished”, that was for me. He suffered for every sinful choice I’ve ever made or will make. It’s finished, done. There’s nothing else I can do to earn it. All that I do now is a gift for Him. It is a way of showing my love. A way to show I believe. But salvation is complete.
P – Thank you Jesus for paying the price for my sin. Thank you that I belong to you. Thank you for being willing to suffer and die. Dear Jesus, help me to live for you.
S – “Jesus answered him, ‘You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore, he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.’”
O – This verse is another reminder of the sovereignty of God. He has all power, all knowledge, all authority. There is no one over Him. No one who makes decisions unless He allows them to do so. He has authority over all powers, over all that exists.
A/P – The LORD God has authority over my life. I belong to Him. Jesus is my Lord and Savior. Nothing comes into my life unless He allows it. I acknowledge His authority over all that I am. Help me Father to walk in submission and humility, help me to not resist you. I want to yield my heart and soul. I want to walk open to you will, whatever it is, whatever it looks like. Please forgive me when I act as if I know what I need. Please forgive my rebellion and foolishness. I want your will and not mine. Please Lord. I know there is nothing good in me apart from your Spirit. I am your creation but marred by sin. Thank you for rescuing and restoring me. Please help me remember I am a sheep and I always need my Shepherd.
Like the frost on a rose, winter comes for us all. Oh how nature acquaints us with the nature of patience.
Like a seed in the snow, I’ve been buried to grow. For Your promise is loyal from seed to Sequoia.
Seasons – Hillsong Worship
I used to think my life was hard because I was doing something wrong.
Like somehow God was mad at me or just leaving me to suffer the natural consequences of my poor choices. Goodness knows, I’ve made plenty of mistakes.
2 “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”
John 9:2, NLT
So I tried harder. Resolved more resolutely. Determined to live my best life starting right now.
Maybe if I eat better, sleep more, take better meds, love better, organize more efficiently, manage finances more wisely, work harder, pray…

S – “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7
O Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the “Helper” in John 14, 15, and 16. The Helper, the Spirit of Truth. The disciples can’t imagine that it would be better for Jesus to leave them. But Jesus teaches them if He returns to heaven, the Helper will come who will never leave them. Helper: advocate, legal assistant, counsel for defense, intercessor. The one who stands by my side to help me and intercede for me. The one who lives in me.
A – I love this name for the Holy Spirit. Helper. I desperately need help. My flesh is weak, my mind is often like a wave tossed by the sea, I have no strength of my own. I need the Helper. Knowing He is there is water to my soul. It is a life raft in the sea. I depend on His intercession for me because of the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
P – Jesus, thank you that you didn’t leave us defenseless. Thank you that you knew how weak we are and that we would need all the help we can get. I believe in you Jesus. I love you. I know you died for me and I’m yours forever. Thank your for sending the Helper. Please Holy Spirit, fill me, help me. Help me live to glorify my Lord. Help me get my eyes off of myself. Please glorify Him in spite of me.
S – “But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” James 1:25
O/A – The perfect law, the law of liberty. This jumped out at me. It’s not us keeping the law, it comes from the freedom we have in Christ.
“When the fulfilling of the Law it is called the “law of liberty” it means that as Christians we pursue love in liberty from law-keeping as the ground of our justification or the power of our sanctification. Instead we pursue it by the “law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:2). We look to the Spirit of Christ for transformation so that love flows by power from within, not pressure from without. The law of liberty is the leading of the Spirit, and “where the Spirit is there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17).” John Piper
It’s all about being led by the Holy Spirit and as the verse says, by “perseverance”. We keep on keeping on. If I keep doing what I know is right by the power of His Holy Spirit and don’t forget, I will be blessed.
P – Thank you Jesus that my obedience comes from the freedom I have in you and not from a need to earn righteousness. Please help me to persevere in doing and not be a hearer who forgets.

My word for 2018 is OPEN. I want to be open to God. To whatever He has for me. Whatever He wants me to do and be.
I want to be open to my husband. Open arms, open heart, not holding back.
I want to be open to my family and friends. Available for what they need.
I want to be open to people I meet along the way. Strangers. I want to let them see me. See the light in me.
Open my heart Lord. To love and care.
Open my eyes to see those around me.
To see into their hearts. To look into their eyes.
Open my ears not just to hear but to listen intently.
Open my soul to let your light shine. To be transparent.
Open my wallet that I will be generous.
Open my hands so that I’m willing to give where you want me to give.
Please Father, help me do my part. Help me be willing to hear and obey. To trust you whatever you ask of me.
Please fill me with your Holy Spirit.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
